School districts must include substance misuse prevention instruction in health curriculum for students in grades 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 covering opioids, controlled substances, prescription and nonprescription medications, and illegal drugs, effective for the 2020-2021 school year and later.

School districts and charter schools are encouraged to integrate substance misuse prevention instruction for grades 5 through 12 into existing programs and curricula.

The commissioner of education must provide districts and charter schools with substance misuse prevention services information and assistance in using Minnesota student survey results to inform prevention programs upon request.

$400,000 is appropriated for fiscal year 2019 to the For Jake's Sake Foundation to collaborate with school districts to integrate evidence-based substance misuse prevention curriculum, identify effective prevention tools, train school staff, and evaluate prevention efforts.

The grant recipient must submit a report by February 15, 2019 detailing expenditures, outcomes, and the school districts implementing or planning to implement the substance misuse prevention curriculum.
