Charter schools and school districts must adopt and provide age-appropriate child safety curriculum for students in kindergarten through grade 12, delivered using videos and role-play demonstrations in collaboration with local law enforcement or self-defense experts.

Curriculum must cover at least nine topics: stranger danger, nonstranger danger, physical self-protection, assertiveness and confidence, appropriate vs inappropriate touch, body warning signs, environmental awareness, code words with parents or guardians, and obtaining law enforcement assistance.

Students must receive child safety instruction at least once per month for 45 minutes during the school year, with each session including classroom discussion between teachers and students following instructional videos or demonstrations.

Charter schools are required to comply with the child safety curriculum requirement consistent with section 121A.24.

The requirement is effective for the 2019-2020 school year and later.
