School boards and nonpublic schools may award high school diplomas to current or former Minnesota residents who are veterans, were previously enrolled in a Minnesota high school, and did not receive a diploma.

Eligible veterans must have actively served during World War II (December 7, 1941 through December 31, 1946), the Korean War (June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955), or the Vietnam conflict (February 28, 1961 through May 7, 1975).

Applicants must have died in active service, been honorably discharged, or been released from active duty due to a service-related disability.

The commissioners of veterans affairs and education must jointly develop an application form, make it available on their websites, establish a uniform eligibility determination process, and identify acceptable documentation for veteran status and service.

Applications may be submitted by the veteran or, if deceased or incapacitated, by an immediate family member (surviving spouse, child, or sibling); affidavits may be accepted when documentation is unavailable.
