Tier 1 teacher licenses require completion of mental illness training under section 122A.187, subdivision 6, as a condition for renewal, effective for licenses issued on or after July 1, 2021.

Tier 2 teacher licenses must include participation in mental illness training before first renewal, in addition to existing cultural competency training requirements, effective for licenses issued on or after July 1, 2021.

All Tier 3 and Tier 4 licensed teachers renewing their licenses must complete at least one hour of suicide prevention best practices training per renewal period based on nationally recognized evidence-based programs.

Initial mental illness training must cover key warning signs of early-onset mental illness in children and adolescents, while subsequent renewal periods must include in-depth training on students' mental illness, trauma, accommodations, parents' roles, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, autism, restrictive procedures, and de-escalation methods.

Career and technical education teachers are exempted from the content examination requirement for Tier 1 license renewal, though mental illness training still applies.
