Commissioner of corrections may place inmates in disciplinary segregation for rule violations involving weapons or bodily harm, or in administrative segregation for safety reasons, subject to specified conditions.

Segregation units must provide regular meals, furnished cells, reading materials, limited recreation, at least three hours daily out of cell, nighttime lights off, and communication and visitation rights.

Inmates serving 15 days in disciplinary segregation require status review by the warden every 15 days; those serving 60 days require commissioner review every 30 days thereafter.

All inmates must be screened by a qualified mental health professional before segregation placement; those with serious or acute mental illness shall be placed in secure treatment units instead.

Inmates cannot be released directly to the community from segregation and must serve at least 30 days in general population first; annual reporting to legislature required starting January 15, 2020.
