Eligible public safety employees who applied for duty disability benefits between May 1, 2019 and January 15, 2020 and received approval from the Public Employees Retirement Association are entitled to receive duty disability benefits.

Applicants must have had at least 20 years of service credit and be age 55 or older on the date their disability application was approved to qualify for benefits.

Duty disability benefits are payable for the period of the eligible person's disability or 60 months, whichever is shorter.

The 60-month benefit period begins on the date the duty disability benefit starts to accrue under Minnesota Statutes section 356.656, subdivision 10, and any prior retirement annuity payments must be reclassified as disability benefit payments.

After the 60-month period ends, eligible persons transition to receiving retirement annuity benefits under Minnesota Statutes section 353.656, subdivision 5a, paragraphs (c) and (e).
