School districts are prohibited from adopting or using names, symbols, or images depicting American Indian tribes, individuals, customs, or traditions as mascots, nicknames, logos, letterheads, or team names.

School districts may request exemptions from the mascot prohibition by submitting written requests to the Tribal Nations Education Committee and Indian Affairs Council, which jointly have discretion to grant exemptions.

Charter schools must comply with the American Indian mascot prohibition and may seek exemptions under the same process available to school districts.

Public postsecondary institutions are prohibited from adopting or using American Indian-related names, symbols, or images as mascots, nicknames, logos, letterheads, or team names.

Public postsecondary institutions may request exemptions from the mascot prohibition through the same process as school districts, requiring joint approval from the Tribal Nations Education Committee and Indian Affairs Council.
