S.F. No. 130 - Safe Schools Levy Modification

• Modifies Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 126C.44, regarding the safe schools levy that districts may levy on taxable property up to $36 per adjusted pupil unit.

• Renumbers eight purposes for safe schools funding, removing the numbering gaps but maintaining all existing purposes including peace officer/sheriff liaison services, drug abuse prevention, gang resistance education, security, and crime prevention measures.

• Adds explicit authorization for school districts to use levy funds for voluntary opt-in suicide prevention tools as part of violence prevention measures.

• Allows school districts that are members of an intermediate school district to include safe schools activity costs for intermediate school district programs, not to exceed $15 times the adjusted pupil units of member districts.

• Preserves existing provisions requiring districts to initially contract with local police or sheriff departments before contracting with other law enforcement agencies within school district boundaries.
