Federal, state, local, and tribal government payments issued to relieve economic hardship from the COVID-19 pandemic are exempt from garnishment and levy claims for consumer debtors with personal, family, or household debts under Minnesota Statutes chapters 550, 551, and 571.

Domestic support orders and obligations, including child support and spousal maintenance under Minnesota Statutes chapters 518 and 518A, are exempt from this protection and may still be garnished.

The bill is effective the day following final enactment and applies retroactively to government assistance provided on or after March 13, 2020.

This section expires on December 31, 2022.
