School boards must maintain minimum annual instruction hours: 425 hours for kindergarten without disability, 935 hours for grades 1-6, and 1,020 hours for grades 7-12.

All-day kindergarten requires minimum 850 hours annually; prekindergarten students require minimum 350 hours if offered by district.

Schools must provide at least 165 days of instruction for grades 1-11 unless using a four-day week schedule approved by the commissioner.

School calendars may include up to five days of online instruction as alternatives to in-person classes due to inclement weather, developed according to section 120A.414.

For high school students, instruction hours include any time when students are actively engaged in the educational process and all statutory requirements are met, including blended learning, digital learning, project-based learning, work-based learning, service learning, and supervised internships.

The effective date is the 2022-2023 school year and later.
