Peace Officer Standards and Training Board may issue bonus payments to peace officers employed by state or local law enforcement agencies who are nominated by their agency's chief law enforcement officer.

Board shall develop nomination forms and guidelines describing the process and criteria for bonus awards, with final decisions at the board's discretion and limited to appropriated funds.

Two types of bonuses may be awarded: bonuses for exemplary service above and beyond the call of duty including acts of heroism or valor, and bonuses for meritorious service with a minimum of five years of employment without adverse disciplinary actions.

Individual bonus payments may not exceed $10,000, and the board must report annually by January 15 to legislative committees on criminal justice policy and funding, including bonus amounts, recipient agencies, and reasons for awards.

Appropriation is made from the general fund for fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, with the board permitted to use up to 3.5 percent of the appropriation for program administration.
