Amends Minnesota Statutes 2020, section 375A.12 to require retention elections for persons appointed to county offices created after the bill's effective date.

County boards must hold a retention election at the first general election following an appointment, asking voters whether to retain the appointee.

If voters reject retention, the appointee may remain in office only until January 1 following the election, at which point the county board must appoint a replacement.

If voters approve retention, the county may keep the appointee and must hold retention elections every four years while that person holds the office.

Ballot question must ask: "May the county board retain [name] as the person appointed and responsible for the functions of [county office title]?" with yes/no options.
