School-sponsored athletic teams at K-12 school districts and charter schools must be designated as female/girls, male/boys, or coeducational based on students' biological sex at birth as listed on official birth certificates issued at or near time of birth.

Only female students based on biological sex may participate in teams designated for females or girls; schools are not liable for compliance with this requirement.

Students harmed by violations or subjected to retaliation for reporting violations may sue for injunctive, mandamus, and declaratory relief within two years and recover attorney fees and costs.

Schools and employees receive legal representation from the attorney general at no cost for lawsuits or complaints resulting from compliance, with the state assuming all related expenses including attorney fees and costs.

Identical requirements and protections apply to public higher education institutions under the Board of Trustees and Board of Regents for intercollegiate, intramural, and club athletic teams and events.
