Peace Officers Standards and Training Board may award grants to qualified law enforcement agencies to reimburse recruitment bonuses for newly hired peace officers and retention bonuses for current officers.

Recruitment bonuses are paid in two installments: one-half upon completing probationary period and one-half upon completing one year of employment in good standing; agencies without probationary periods pay the full bonus after one year.

Retention bonuses are paid in two installments: one-half upon completing a specified number of months after receiving bonus notice and one-half upon completing one year of employment in good standing.

Qualified agencies must have a civilian review board, community policing agreement or engagement strategies, body cameras or squad cameras, and demonstrate at least a specified percent loss of peace officers through resignations/retirements within the past year or expect such losses within the next year.

Grant awards are discretionary and limited to appropriated amounts; if demand exceeds funding, the board shall distribute grants geographically and by agency size in a balanced manner.
