Firearm owners must store firearms unloaded with a locking device and separately from ammunition when not carried or under their control.

All firearm transfers must include an appropriate locking device unless the transferee provides proof of ownership of a locking device capable of secure storage.

Violation of storage requirements is a misdemeanor; becomes a gross misdemeanor if the unsecured firearm is loaded or adjacent to ammunition.

Violation becomes a felony with up to 18 months imprisonment or $5,000 fine if an unsecured loaded firearm is accessed by a child or prohibited person; becomes a felony with up to 5 years imprisonment or $25,000 fine if used in a felony crime of violence.
