Teachers with at least three years of allowable service credit in the Teachers Retirement Association may purchase service credit for periods of teaching service in other states by paying the required purchase payment amount.

Eligible service periods include teaching in another state before becoming a member of the association, or teaching in another state during employment gaps after terminating and before returning to Minnesota teaching service.

Teachers must submit an application to the executive director with documentation of out-of-state employment, the specific periods for which credit is requested, and authorization to verify employment history.

Service credit purchase payment must be completed before the teacher's termination of teaching service, and purchasing credit does not change the date the teacher first became a member for annuity computation purposes.

Identical provisions apply to the St. Paul Teachers Retirement Fund Association under separate statute, with both sections effective the day following final enactment.
