School districts and charter schools that issue student identification cards to middle school or high school students must include a mental health crisis telephone number on the card (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, crisis text line, or the national 988 number when available).

The requirement does not apply if including the telephone number would require an additional expenditure by the district or charter school.

Nonpublic schools are encouraged, but not required, to include mental health crisis telephone numbers on student identification cards.

The law is effective July 1, 2021.
