Minnesota Historical Society shall establish a historic building facade grant pilot program providing grants to cities with populations under 15,000 that have commercial historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Initial pilot program targets the cities of Litchfield and Virginia, with each city able to receive no more than $2,500,000 in total grants.

Property owners in eligible historic districts must use grant funds to rehabilitate historic building facades according to federal rehabilitation standards under Code of Federal Regulations title 36, section 67.7, with completion required within two years.

Unused grant money must be returned to the Minnesota Historical Society for deposit in the general fund.

$5,000,000 in fiscal year 2022 is appropriated from the general fund to the Minnesota Historical Society for the grant program.
