H.F. 2206 Summary

• Requires one credit in civics in either 11th or 12th grade for students beginning 9th grade in the 2024-2025 school year and later as a high school graduation requirement.

• Increases social studies graduation requirements from three to three and one-half credits, with civics being one of those required credits.

• Repeals the existing civics test requirement under Minnesota Statutes 2022, section 120B.02, subdivision 3, which previously required students to correctly answer at least 30 of 50 civics test questions but did not prevent graduation for failure to do so.

• Adds civics instruction to the required statewide academic standards under social studies, which must include history, geography, economics, and government and citizenship.
