Health plans must cover all physician-prescribed, medically appropriate and necessary equipment and supplies for diabetes management and treatment, without excluding any brand or type.

Coverage must include diabetes outpatient self-management training and education, including medical nutrition therapy, provided by certified, registered, or licensed health care professionals following American Diabetes Association standards.

Coverage applies to persons with gestational, type I, or type II diabetes.

Coverage is subject to the same deductible or coinsurance provisions as the plan's hospital, medical expense, medical equipment, or prescription drug benefits.

Health carriers may not reduce or eliminate diabetes-related coverage due to this requirement; effective January 1, 2025.
