Sellers offering goods or services for sale in Minnesota must accept United States currency, including Federal Reserve notes, from consumers making in-person purchases.

Requirement applies only to sellers accepting in-person payment; sellers with multiple points of sale at one location must accept cash at no less than one point of sale.

Exception for retail transactions requiring a security deposit on a credit card or credit card number to cover unforeseen damages or expenses.

Exception for sellers using cash-to-prepaid card conversion devices if the transaction has no fee, requires no minimum deposit greater than $1, provides a receipt upon request, and the prepaid card funds have no expiration date or transaction limits.

Banking institutions and credit unions are exempt from the requirement; sellers violating this section face civil penalties of up to $250 per transaction, effective January 1, 2025.
