Firearm owners, possessors, or controllers must report lost or stolen firearms to law enforcement within 48 hours of discovering the loss or theft.

Violations are penalized as a petty misdemeanor for first offense, misdemeanor for second offense, and gross misdemeanor for third or subsequent offenses.

Persons who report lost or stolen firearms in compliance are immune from criminal prosecution for offenses related to firearm storage under state law.

Chiefs of police and sheriffs must report lost or stolen firearms to the commissioner of public safety within seven days of receiving notification.

$36,000 is appropriated from the general fund in fiscal year 2025 to the commissioner of public safety for a reporting system managed by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
