School boards and charter schools of any enrollment size must provide health services including health promotion, disease prevention, and health equity activities.

Schools with 1,000 or more pupils must employ at least one full-time licensed school nurse, or use alternative arrangements approved by the commissioner.

Schools with 500-999 pupils must employ at least one full-time licensed school nurse in each building, or may pool nurses across multiple schools with combined enrollment over 500.

Schools with fewer than 500 pupils may cooperate with other districts or special education cooperatives to employ a shared licensed school nurse.

Additional health staff must be supervised by licensed school nurses and may only provide services within their scope of practice; unlicensed personnel cannot practice nursing.
