SF 2886 - Military and Veteran Vehicle Registration and Driver's License Discounts

• Reduces vehicle registration tax by 50 percent for passenger automobiles, one-ton pickup trucks, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles owned by active duty military members, honorably discharged military members (with DD-214 form), or veterans as defined in Minnesota statute 197.447.

• Provides 50 percent discount on driver's license and Minnesota identification card fees for active duty military members, honorably discharged military members, and veterans, with discounts clearly indicated on all application forms.

• Reduces two-wheeled vehicle endorsement fees by 50 percent for the same eligible military and veteran applicants, with reduced fees deposited into the motorcycle safety fund.

• Exempts vehicles from registration tax during active military service and for 90 days after completion or honorable discharge; after 90 days, owners become eligible for the 50 percent discount under the new provisions rather than full exemption.

• Requires the commissioner to ensure summary information about discounted fees is available to applicants and included in renewal notifications with website addresses displaying the information.
