Modifies Minnesota Statutes 2022, section 123B.09, subdivision 5b, regarding procedures for filling school board member vacancies through appointment or special election.

If a vacancy occurs less than two years before the term expires, no special election is required and the board-appointed candidate serves the remainder of the term.

If a vacancy occurs less than 90 days before the term expires, the board may choose whether to fill the vacancy by appointment or leave it unfilled.

A valid petition signed by at least five percent of eligible voters in the district can reject a board appointment within 30 days, requiring the board to appoint a new candidate.

Effective July 1, 2024, for all vacancies occurring on or after that date.
