Expands Minnesota Statutes section 609.2231, subdivision 2 to include assault against physicians, nurses, and other health care service providers in hospital emergency departments as a felony offense.

Creates a new subdivision 2b establishing that physical assault causing demonstrable bodily harm to any physician, nurse, or other health care service provider is a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than two years or a fine of not more than $4,000, or both.

Amends existing subdivision 2 to clarify that assault against health care providers performing duties is subject to the same penalties as assault against firefighters and emergency medical services personnel.

Effective date of August 1, 2024 applies to crimes committed on or after that date.
