A person who steals a firearm must report the theft to a law enforcement agency in the jurisdiction where the theft occurred as soon as practicable but not later than 48 hours after the theft.

First violation is a petty misdemeanor, second violation is a misdemeanor, and third or subsequent violations are gross misdemeanors.

Chiefs of police and sheriffs must report stolen firearms to the commissioner of public safety within seven days of receiving notification of the theft.

An appropriation of unspecified amount from the general fund in fiscal year 2025 is provided to the commissioner of public safety for a reporting system overseen by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to facilitate firearm theft reporting.

The law becomes effective August 1, 2024, and applies to thefts committed on or after that date.
