Requires persons who own, possess, or control a firearm to report its loss or theft to law enforcement within 48 hours of discovering or reasonably discovering the loss or theft.

Establishes escalating penalties: petty misdemeanor for first violation, misdemeanor for second violation, and gross misdemeanor for third or subsequent violations.

Grants immunity from criminal prosecution for firearm storage violations to persons who report lost or stolen firearms in compliance with the 48-hour reporting requirement.

Requires chiefs of police or sheriffs to report lost or stolen firearms to the commissioner of public safety within seven days of receiving notification.

Effective August 1, 2024, and applies to violations committed on or after that date.
