Health plan companies must cover all FDA-approved prescription medications and medical services used to treat or slow the progression of dementia, including diagnostic testing to determine treatment appropriateness or effectiveness

Step therapy protocols are prohibited for dementia treatments, meaning insurers cannot require patients to try and fail on cheaper medications before covering prescribed treatments

Medical Assistance (Medicaid) prior authorization requirements are amended to include the new dementia coverage rules, applying step therapy restrictions to both managed care and fee-for-service delivery

Effective date is January 1, 2026, applying to health plans offered, issued, or renewed on or after that date
