Health care facilities (hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers) must only employ central service technicians who have passed a nationally accredited exam and hold credentials such as certified registered central service technician, certified endoscope reprocessor, certified sterile processing and distribution technician, or certified flexible endoscope reprocessor

Technicians employed by a health care facility on or before December 31, 2027 are grandfathered in without certification requirements

New hires who lack certification have 18 months from their hire date to obtain one of the required credentials

Qualified central service technicians must complete 10 hours of continuing education annually related to their functions to maintain eligibility

Exemptions apply to health care practitioners, persons with nationally accredited health care certifications, and students or interns performing functions under direct supervision as part of training
