Removes the exemption allowing permit holders to carry pistols in Capitol Area state buildings after notifying the Commissioner of Public Safety, effectively prohibiting concealed carry in the Capitol complex

Maintains existing exemptions for licensed peace officers and military personnel performing official duties, and for weapons displayed as demonstrative evidence at trials

Adds a new exemption for retired peace officers employed by the Minnesota House of Representatives in primary security functions with the House Sergeant-at-Arms, who may carry under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 926C)

Preserves the exemption allowing permit holders to keep firearms in their vehicles or transport them to/from vehicle trunks within the Capitol Area

Violation remains a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment or a fine up to $10,000, or both; effective August 1, 2026
