Penalties escalate with repeat violations: first offense is a petty misdemeanor, second offense is a misdemeanor, third or subsequent offense is a gross misdemeanor

Persons who comply with the reporting requirement receive immunity from criminal prosecution for state firearm storage offenses

Chiefs of police and sheriffs must report lost or stolen firearms to the Commissioner of Public Safety within seven days of receiving notification

Appropriates $36,000 as a onetime general fund allocation in fiscal year 2027 to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to create a reporting system; effective August 1, 2026
