Health plans must cover diagnosis and treatment of obesity as a chronic disease, including intensive behavioral/lifestyle treatment, metabolic and bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved obesity medications

Coverage criteria for obesity medications cannot be more restrictive than FDA-approved indications, and cost-sharing (deductibles, copays, coinsurance) must be the same as for any other illness or condition

Plans may still apply utilization management to determine medical necessity, but must use the same standards applied to other covered conditions

Medical Assistance (Medicaid) must also cover obesity management and treatment under the same requirements as private health plans

Private health plan requirements take effect January 1, 2027; Medical Assistance coverage takes effect January 1, 2026, or upon federal approval, whichever is later
