Health plans must cover alternatives to opioids for pain treatment, including a minimum of two FDA-approved nonopioid prescription drugs that are not Schedule I, II, or III controlled substances

Health plans are prohibited from providing preferential coverage for opioids over nonopioid alternatives

Prior authorization and step therapy requirements for FDA-approved nonopioid pain drugs cannot be more restrictive than those for opioid drugs

Health plan companies must annually distribute educational materials about nonopioid pain treatment options to in-network providers and enrollees, and post these materials on their websites

Effective January 1, 2027, applying to health plans offered, issued, or renewed on or after that date
