Union members may allocate all or a portion of their union dues or membership fees to the local, state, or national organization of their choice, rather than having dues automatically directed by the exclusive representative

Exclusive representatives must inform members of their option to allocate dues to different organizations, and all dues deduction authorization forms must clearly present this choice

Public employers must remit deductions to either the exclusive representative or to the organization of the employee's choice within 30 days of the deduction

The changes apply to both public employees (under Minnesota Statutes section 179A.06) and private sector employees (under section 181.06)

Private union members without an exclusive representative have the right to request payroll deductions directed to the local, state, or national organization of their choice
