Sellers of essential goods and services in Minnesota must accept U.S. currency, including Federal Reserve notes, for in-person purchases

Sellers with multiple points of sale at one location comply by accepting cash at least one register; online-only or non-in-person transactions are exempt

Exceptions include transactions requiring credit card security deposits for damages, and sellers using fee-free cash-to-prepaid-card conversion devices with no expiration dates and minimum deposits of $1 or less

Banks and credit unions are exempt from the requirement

Violations carry a civil penalty of up to $250 per transaction, effective January 1, 2027
