Criminal investigators (special agents, special agents-in-charge, or administrators) in the Department of Revenue Criminal Investigations Bureau may be appointed as peace officers by the director of revenue if they meet Chapter 590 requirements and hold a valid peace officer license.

Appointed investigators must take an oath to support the U.S. and Missouri constitutions and faithfully perform their duties, with a certificate of appointment filed with the secretary of state.

Certified investigators have police powers to enforce laws related to state income tax, estate tax, motor vehicle taxes and fees, sales and use tax, and licensure of persons or businesses regulated by the director of revenue.

Investigators certified under this section may carry firearms at all times, notwithstanding other state law restrictions.

The Department of Revenue shall provide firearms safety training with a minimum of 16 hours required, and investigators may exercise full peace officer powers when working with sheriffs, police chiefs, or the Missouri State Highway Patrol upon request.
