Health carriers must provide coverage for habilitative services for children under 19 years of age with congenital, genetic, or early acquired disorders, effective January 1, 2011

Covered services include occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and similar treatments prescribed by a physician to enhance functional ability, with specific examples including autism spectrum disorder and cerebral palsy

Treatment must be administered by licensed providers (speech-language pathologist, audiologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, physician, nurse, optometrist, nutritionist, social worker, or psychologist) upon physician referral

Coverage is subject to general policy exclusions, limitations, coordination of benefits, utilization review, medical necessity review, and managed care provisions

Coverage does not apply to purely educational services covered under state or federal law, mental or emotional disorders covered elsewhere, or supplemental insurance policies
