Upon sale or lease renewal of existing residential rental properties with carbon monoxide hazards, alarms must be installed within 10 feet of each sleeping room, powered by the building's wiring with battery backup.

Existing rental dwelling units must have at least one battery-operated smoke alarm on each level, within 10 feet of sleeping rooms, and inside sleeping rooms prior to new occupancy.

Newly constructed residential properties must have hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms with battery backup that activate all alarms when one triggers, per NFPA 72 standards.

Property owners must maintain alarms in good repair and replace missing or inoperable units; willful failure is a class B misdemeanor, and tampering with alarms is a class A misdemeanor for first conviction and class D felony for subsequent convictions.
