Health carriers must cover renewals of prescription eye drops when the renewal is requested less than 30 days after the original prescription or last renewal was distributed to the insured.

The prescribing healthcare professional must indicate on the original prescription that additional quantities are needed, and the renewal cannot exceed the quantity marked as needed.

Coverage for prescription eye drop renewals cannot have a higher deductible or co-payment than other similar health care services provided by the health benefit plan.

The requirement applies to health benefit plans delivered, issued, continued, or renewed in Missouri on or after January 1, 2012.

Supplemental insurance policies, including Medicare supplements, long-term care policies, and accident-only policies, are exempt from this requirement.
