Repeals and replaces sections 565.081, 565.082, and 565.083 to add "elected official or his or her staff member" to assault statutes covering law enforcement officers, corrections officers, emergency personnel, and other protected individuals.

Defines "elected official or his or her staff member" as any person elected to federal, state, or local office and any person employed by such an elected official as a staff member.

Assault of an elected official or staff member in the first degree (attempting to kill or causing serious physical injury) is classified as a class A felony.

Assault of an elected official or staff member in the second degree (various levels of physical injury or threats) is classified as a class B felony or class C felony depending on the specific violation, with mandatory jail time required for certain violations.

Assault of an elected official or staff member in the third degree (reckless injury, threatening contact, or unauthorized physical contact) is classified as a class A misdemeanor.
