October is designated as "Walk & Bike to School Month" and the first Wednesday of October as "Walk & Bike to School Day" to improve student safety and encourage walking and bicycling to school.

May is designated as "Missouri Bicycle Month," the third Friday of May as "Bike to Work Day," and that week as "Bike to Work Week" to promote bicycling as transportation and recreation.

The designations aim to promote physical activity, student health and fitness, improved academics, reduced congestion and pollution, and more livable communities.

Additional goals include promoting bicycle safety, encouraging road sharing, promoting Missouri as a bicycle tourism destination, and supporting economic development and family wellness.
