Adds "elected official or his or her staff member" to assault statutes 565.081, 565.082, and 565.083 that previously protected law enforcement officers, corrections officers, emergency personnel, highway workers, and probation and parole officers.

Defines "elected official or his or her staff member" as any person elected to federal, state, or local office and any person employed by such an elected official as a member of their staff.

Assault of an elected official or staff member in the first degree (attempting to kill or causing serious physical injury) remains a class A felony.

Assault in the second degree is a class B felony (or class C felony for certain subsections) with mandatory jail time required for violations involving deadly weapons, physical injury, or reckless conduct.

Assault in the third degree (reckless physical injury, threat of injury, or unauthorized physical contact) remains a class A misdemeanor.
