Active members of the County Employees' Retirement System who die receive a $10,000 death benefit, plus their accumulated contributions if they die before becoming vested (after December 31, 2002).

Members with less than eight years of creditable service forfeit all rights upon employment termination but may receive refunds of their contributions or accumulated contributions as a death benefit.

Institutions employing outside employees in the Missouri State Employees' Retirement System must contribute 7% of payroll as of July 1, 2013, and may require employee contributions up to 4% additional with contributions picked up by the institution.

Outside employees who participated in the defined contribution plan for at least six years may elect to join the Missouri State Employees' Retirement System while actively employed, but cannot receive credited service for prior participation in the defined contribution plan.

The election to switch from the defined contribution plan is unavailable to outside employees hired on or after July 1, 2013.
