County commissions may submit propositions to voters to make the county prosecutor a full-time position on their own motion or upon petition of 10% of voters from the previous general election.

Election notice must be published in a county newspaper (or adjoining county newspaper if none exists) for three consecutive weeks, with final publication 10-30 days before the election.

If voters approve the proposition, the full-time prosecutor position becomes effective when the next elected prosecutor is sworn into office, except for counties meeting specific classifications.

In third classification counties with township government and 28,000-31,000 inhabitants, a voter-approved proposition becomes effective on January 1 of the year immediately following adoption.

Counties that previously elected full-time prosecutors may vote to provide retirement benefits matching first classification county standards, with irrevocable elections effective January 1 and requiring matching contribution rates to the Missouri prosecuting attorneys and circuit attorneys' retirement system.
