Circuit court judges may require civil case filers to deposit a surcharge in addition to other required court fees, with the surcharge in effect as of August 28, 2001 remaining until changed.

Most circuit courts may increase the surcharge to a maximum of $15, while Jackson County and circuits reimbursing the state for family court commissioner salaries may increase it to a maximum of $20.

Surcharge provisions do not apply to proceedings where costs are waived or paid by the county, state, or city.

First classification counties with between 93,800 and 93,900 inhabitants may impose an additional $10 fee on civil cases, excluding adoption and small claims cases, effective through December 31, 2014.
