Sheriffs receive $20 per item served for summons, writs, or court orders, and $10 for subpoenas, plus mileage at the Internal Revenue Service rate for motor vehicle use.

Court costs are waived for service charges when the state, county, or municipality pays court costs; sheriffs may refuse service until charges are paid.

Sheriffs must pay all service charges into the county treasury, except up to $50,000 annually from non-budgeted sources (such as recovered evidence sales) may be held in a discretionary fund for sheriff's office operations and to supplement the sheriff's base salary.

Funds exceeding $50,000 annually must be transferred to the county general revenue fund; discretionary funds do not lapse at the end of the fiscal year.

An additional $10 per service collected by sheriffs is paid to the state through the county treasurer and deposited into the deputy sheriff salary supplementation fund.
