FDA-certified mammography facilities must provide patients with a specific notice upon completion of a mammogram if dense breast tissue is detected that could hide abnormalities.

The required notice informs patients that dense breast tissue is relatively common and recommends discussing supplemental screening options with their physician if other breast cancer risk factors are present.

The notice requirement does not create any duty of care beyond providing the notice itself, and the notice information is inadmissible as evidence in civil, judicial, or administrative proceedings.

Compliance with the notice requirement is mandatory beginning January 1, 2015.
