State Board of Education members cannot be appointed to a combination of terms exceeding 16 years total

Members appointed to fill a departing member's remaining term of less than one year may still serve an additional 16 years after completing that partial term

Members who began serving a term before August 28, 2015, are grandfathered in and may complete that term without it counting toward the new limit

The board consists of eight lay members appointed by the governor with senate consent, each serving eight-year terms
