Every Missouri law enforcement agency must establish a written policy for investigating officer-involved deaths where their officers are involved

Investigations must be conducted by at least two investigators, with neither employed by the agency whose officer was involved in the death

Traffic-related officer-involved deaths require crash reconstruction units from an outside agency, though state law enforcement agencies may use their own internal crash reconstruction units

Investigators must provide complete reports expeditiously to the local prosecutor, and if no prosecution occurs, the investigation findings must be publicly released

"Officer-involved death" is defined as any death resulting directly from a law enforcement officer's action or omission while on duty or performing law enforcement activities off duty
